After a while, publishing a piece

On the second of January, I had a flash fiction piece published with Electric Literature’s The Commuter. It had been about two years prior to this since my last publication, and I had been feeling discouraged. I am feeling grateful and reaffirmed to be able to get this piece out there, and it has been especially meaningful to get to have some meaningful conversations and messages from family, friends, and a few readers since it came online.

The piece is called “Mom on the Beach,” and it does have its toes in real experience. The editors at Electric Literature gave the whole issue the title “It’s More Dangerous to Stand Still,” which I really like. I won’t say more here, but I hope you will give it a read, and I hope that it will mean something to you.

Read “Mom on the Beach” here.

We traveled safely back to Norway, and despite some significant jet lag, we are back into the swing of things at school. In my English literature class, I am teaching a play I read last summer during some explorations of world literature, Wole Soyinka’s A Dance of the Forests, which was written to commemorate Nigerian independence but was ultimately condemned by the Nigerian government. It’s a complex, political, magical play.

Best wishes,
Jimmy

Friday afternoon, a fog descended on campus. Around 4:00pm, I hiked up a little ways onto the mountain and looked back to see this beautiful sea of fog in our valley.
